Nanotopia Interdisciplinary Artist Residencies

Nanotopia invites artists, researchers, and creative technologists to take part in immersive residencies at our downtown Toronto studio. Rooted in the intersections of bioart, sound, and immersive technologies, our residencies offer a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration. From speculative design and digital fabrication to ecological thinking, mycology, and extended reality, the potential for new ideas and perspectives is boundless.
Residencies are designed as laboratories for experimentation and exchange rather than production-driven retreats. Artists are encouraged to engage with Nanotopia’s ongoing explorations into symbiosis, sentience, and more-than-human futures, while bringing their own unique practices into dialogue with our environment, tools, and networks. Residencies take place annually by invitation in the spring or fall, TBD with artists.

Participants have access to:
-
Studio facilities equipped for sound design, immersive media, and bio-material exploration.
-
Mentorship and dialogue with Tosca Terán and Andrei Gravelle, whose collaborative practice merges art, science, and technology.
-
Opportunities to connect with Toronto’s vibrant arts and research communities, as well as Nanotopia’s international partners, providing a rich network for collaboration, inspiration, and potential future projects.
-
24/7 studio access.
The residencies are framed as reciprocal exchanges: residents contribute their perspective to Nanotopia’s living ecosystem of practice, while receiving space, support, and dialogue to develop their own work.
The emphasis is not on a prescriptive outcome, but on process, experimentation, and cultivating relationships across disciplines and species.
Residencies take place annually by invitation in the spring or fall, TBD with artists. 2 week minimum stay.
